What the Sacramento Bee had to say about Metro City Soccer
Building the arena: After the building walls were up and the foundation poured, the offices, showers and snack bar were built. Supports for the end walls and side glass were installed into the concrete floor. Tons of clean sand and finely ground rubber particles were delivered in large white bags. Rolls of turf were delivered, but the blades were long (3 inches) and wide (3/8 inch). Special equipment was brought in to spread the sand and rubber mixtures.
A crew pulled each roll of turf into place with special tongs, to avoid tearing the turf. Then, clean sand was spread about 1/2 inch thick and a special shredding machine shredded the turf. More clean sand was mixed into the finely ground rubber mixture and spread all over using more equipment that was specially made for this turf. Again, the turf blades were shredded several more times to get the effect of a finely bladed lawn.
Yellow lines were painted to mark the boundaries using special scuff-resistant paint. All glass panels were put into place and the large nets were hung from the ceiling.
The scoreboard (donated by Coca-Cola) was mounted and the control panel was placed mid-field on the far side, to be controlled by the referees. It is also between the two team boxes and player benches. There is also a snack bar, showers and lockers available.
A referee class was held to explain the differences between outdoor soccer and indoor soccer rules. Each game will have two 23 minute halves with a two minute half time. Games will start promptly every 50 minutes, with only two minutes to prepare for the next game. Any warm-ups will be done off the field, before game time. All game balls will be supplied by Metro City Soccer and personal or team balls will not be allowed inside the building at any time.
